MEMS Lab-on-a-Chip (LOAC) for Microbial Detection and Quantification (Download PDF)
Professor Michael Hoffmann’s group, which is located in the Linde+Robinson Laboratory at Caltech, is seeking qualified candidates to fill several post-doctoral positions in order to help us develop integrated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) as portable devices that can be applied to detect and quantify pathogens in water/wastewater samples in remote locations in the developing world. The position involves the development of protocols and devices for sample concentration, purification, and analysis. Other duties of the position include providing assistance in graduate student supervising, proposal writing, and other academic activities that are beneficial to the candidate's career development. The post-doctoral positions and research are funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The successful candidate(s) should have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, microbiology, environmental engineering, or other closely related fields. Previous research experience in design and fabrication of lab-on-a-chip (LOAC) devices and microbial quantification using molecular microbiology methods (e.g., real-time PCR, digital PCR, etc.) is highly preferred. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently are important. Good communication skills, both verbal and writing, are essential.
