MedE : EAS Trailblazers Department Seminar
Abstract:
Recent advances in bioelectronics have enabled new approaches for complex disease monitoring and treatment. However, the mechanical and biochemical mismatches between natural biological tissues and conventional engineering materials continue to hinder the integration of bioelectronic devices with living organisms. In this talk, I will discuss conceptual advances in polymer chemistry, granular transport, microfabrication, and device engineering that enable novel bioelectronic systems, with an emphasis on two recent examples from my work. First, I will introduce a dynamic hydrogel platform that can integrate with cardiac electrophysiology mapping devices to enable stable bioelectrical signal transmission and provide therapeutic effects for treating myocardial infarction. Second, I will describe active biointegrated living electronics that combine conventional flexible printed circuits with living cells for managing inflammatory skin diseases. Finally, I will share a perspective on how these platforms may advance both fundamental biological discovery and the development of next-generation bioelectronic therapies for chronic disease management and clinical translation.
